Ardèche Gorges

In the south of the department, the Ardèche Gorges form a deep canyon of about 30 kilometres that stretches between the towns of Vallon Pont d’Arc and Saint Martin d’Ardèche. A nature reserve, the Ardèche Gorges are home to abundant flora and fauna in a wild and untouched natural environment. With panoramas ranging from limestone cliffs to sandy beaches, it is a gigantic playground for a wide range of activities including canoeing, swimming, and hiking.

The famous Pont d’Arc

The only one of its kind in the world, the famous Pont d’Arc is a natural arch measuring 54 m high and 60 m wide. It is estimated to have been dug into the limestone rock by the Ardèche River over 500,000 years ago. A natural gateway to the Ardèche Gorges, the gigantic size of the majestic Pont d’Arc is impressive. Observe it from upstream and downstream, or from below – swimming or canoeing.

Grotte Chauvet 2

Grotte Chauvet 2 is the exact replica of the original Chauvet cave discovered in 1994 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered one of the oldest decorated palaeolithic caves in the world. In order to preserve this priceless gem for humanity, the original cave was recreated so that we can all discover and admire the extraordinary paintings and engravings dating back 36,000 years.

Caves and sinkholes

Ardèche has many other caves and sinkholes which provide extraordinary spectacles. Not far from Vallon Pont d’Arc is Aven d’Orgnac sinkhole, a listed Grand Site de France with huge volumes and Cité de la Préhistoire visitor centre, Grotte de La Madeleine in Saint-Remèze, and the equally famous Aven Marzal, an invitation to journey to the centre of the earth.
